SIERRA LEONE'S RE-RUN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION FIXED FOR 27TH MARCH 2018, IS THE DETERMINANT

Sierra Leone, a tiny West African country with an estimated population figure of ten million people, held her general election on the 7th of March, 2018.

The final result was eventually  announced at 19:45 GMT, on the 13th of March 2018, six days after the election was conducted, following the sluggish and piecemeal arrival of the election results from different areas of the country.

Out of the sixteen registered Presidential Candidates contesting for the seat, only two - Julius Maada Bio of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) and Dr. Samura Kamara of the All Peoples Congress (APC) scaled to the top, with each scoring total votes of 1,097, 482 (43℅), and 1,082, 748 (42℅), respectively.

Julius Maada Bio of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) with 43℅ total score, ought to have been declared the winner over his rival, Samura Kamara of the All Peoples Congress (APC) who polled with a total score of 42℅. But according to Sierra Leone Constitutional Act governing the National Electoral Commission (NEC), if after an election and no candidate clearly emerges with a mandatory poll totalling up to 55℅ of the total votes cast, a runoff election between the two top contenders has to be conducted for the emergence of a clear winner. It is based on this constitutional provision that a runoff has been scheduled between the above two top contestants, come 27th of March, 2018.

Lots of tensions and palpable fears are presently on the horizon as law abiding residents of Sierra Leone express doubts of an eventual peaceful and acceptable runoff results as proponents of the two Presidential candidates threaten the peace of the country with vociferous statements and actions. These developments observers say, may lead to a breakdown of law and order and a repeat of tribal conflicts as witnessed on the 23rd of March 1991, when the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) with support from Special Forces of Charles Taylor's National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL), intervened in the country, in an attempt to overthrow the government of Joseph Momoh. We pray that the situation be properly handled so that it does not degenerate to the point that peace and tranquility will be jeopardized in Mama Salone.
